Have owned a Stihl 028Super, 034, 026Pro, and 046Magnum. No experience with other makes, but some comments from loggers indicate the Huscavarna's are equivalent. Best overall runner was the 028.
According to my dealer, Stihl's model lineup was divided by the number: even model# (026, 036, etc) are pro versions with heavier duty housing, mechanicals, etc. The odd model#'s are lighter duty (Farm Boss,etc). But Stihl's new numbering system blurrs that line-up, unfortunately. Any good dealer will get you to the right saw -- the pro's are worth the extra money.

I like Toyota's; have 4 in the family. Want to buy their p/u, but the competition is fierce. The new F150, the new Nissan Titan, the Silverado, all have the necessary features.<br>
I am waiting to look at the Tundra crew cab, coming next week, but the lack of an engine option with some serious displacement concerns me. Don't know how Toyota expects to stay competitive with a small v-8 (they tried to make-do with a T100, and that didn't work). Has anyone heard whether Mr Toyota-san is coming to America with anything to match the competition?<br>

What about the Yamaha Rhino 660? Just looked at my dealer's first delivery, and liked what i saw. At $8500, it seems like a value. Only concern is the small box, rated at 400#.
All the reviews seen recently go on and on about the excellent performance on slopes and hills, which is my main issue with ATV's, etc.

The clippings, leaves, etc are thrown up from the mower deck, and they are drawn to the exterior grills by the radiator's fan, which draws lots of air thru these grills. The debris collects and builds up on the grills, and is difficult to remove because it just gets sucked back as you try to sweep it off.
The interior screen gets clogged by fine particles that either are pulled thru the exterior screen, or find their way thru small gaps and seams in the body work.
This definitely is a major issue for these models, different than with conventional CUT's, which have the grill and radiator up front (I had had a 755, 955, 1070, and now a 4700. They all incurred grill buildup of bugs, leaves, etc, but nothing like what happens to my 595. I could mow all day with those other tractors, and only clean the screens when I was done. With the 595, I clean the exterior screens continuously, and watch the temp gauge with one eye all the time. I can tell instantly when the interior screen starts getting blocked by the needle starting to climb.
But, like everything in life (wife, kids, job, me, etc) nothing is perfect, and I still like the tractor.

Didn't JD and Bombardier announce a strategic partnership maybe 6-9 mos ago to develop new types of recreational and utility vehicles? So, has anyone heard of any developments?

Oh yeah, about the tire pressure. I diddled with my R4's a lot trying to improve on the tendency to slide when going sideways on a hill. The advice about discarding the manual advice is right on.
My approach was to lower the pressure until the tire showed a little "belly" at ground contact. This allows the bias ply tread to make full contact with the ground (something that radials don't worry about).
I kept my front pressure up somewhat because of the loads when FEL'g. But found I had to go to 5-10 psi in the rear R4's because they have such a stiff sidewall. Never had a problem with rim slip, but you have to adjust when the temp drops to keep the pressure up; otherwise leakage starts.

The micro's, etc just don't do it for me.
I like good old mass market beer, in the following order:
1. Icehouse (50 cents/can)
2. Pabst (40 cents/can)
3. Sam Adams Lite (70 cents/can, when I want to splurge)
4. Blatz Lite (31 cents/can, when I'm short)
5. Export Lite (40 cents/can; a local beer originally)

My least favorites:
1. Coors Lite
2. Busch
3. Leinkugel Red
4. Guiness (how can anyone drink this oil pan sludge?)
5. Bud (just too big, and too expensive)

Addendum to my previous comments:
Option C: Go to a Vermeer dealer or equivalent, and rent a chipper. My local dealer rents units with 6"x9" feed (go with this size !!!), powered by a good-sized diesel, all on a 2 wheel trailer that you can pull by truck or tractor nearly anywhere. I used one once and it digested with nary a belch the remnants or a big windstorm plus a load of major trimmings in an hour.

Bernie - your experience with the 855 is unfortunate. I had a 755, then a 955, and they were fine machines. Wish i still had the 955; i used to think the best thing that JD could do was come out with a "1055". Instead they went the 4000 series direction.
Chief gave some very pragmatic advice; the best point was to get past the problems and make the best of it.

Hey Dennis.
I don't jump onto your website everyday like some regulars, so obviously I missed your conversion to paid-membership. And I just found the other string of comments from the regulars, so that's the reason for a new post.
Since you're going to derive revenue from visitors, I offer a few comments on what I would expect from your change in status -- in other words, a commercial enterprise creates higher expectations from the paying cliente.
First, your home page ought to include some clear statement of the commercial nature of the site, what a non-Premier member can do on this site, an explanation of the costs(what the fee gets the subscriber), etc.
To enter the site and dig into several levels of subjects, only to find out a fee is required is irritating -- this is one reason the home page should contain a notice that a fee is required.
Secondly, being paid for advice and technical information posted herein may put your site into some position of responsibility for anyone following the advice found on the site and resulting in a loss or injury.

I had the same problem with my 4700. Had the unit checked over by the dealer w/o finding anything wrong. They oiled all the linkages, etc. Haven't had the problem again. But i'm still perplexed by the grabbing, because i recall checking everything when it happened -- brakes, tranny, etc, and nothing seemed to be sticking.

Here in Western Wis, we had a relatively cold winter and little snow cover. Frost went down 60" in some places.
I'm building a 16"x24" storage shed this summer. Haven't decided between pole barn approach or concrete piers/frame construction. Don't plan to go down further than 4' either way.

I have experience with matching trailers to tractors. The mistake is to buy a trailer that is a match to your current tractor. Do not, repeat, do not trap yourself by buying a trailer that is just big enough for your current tractor.
Some time you will need bigger. Either you trade up in tractor size, or you tackle a moving job that exceeds your trailer's capacity, etc.
Strongly recommend buying a standard car-carrier trailer for your needs. They are in-expensive because they are a standard size and very common. Such a trailer will handle your current tractor and give you up-grading coverage when you buy a bigger tractor (and you will, as we all have done).

I don't understand the logic of critics who complaint about the use of electronics for controlling tractor functions. Just about everything else in our society are microprocessor-controlled: cars, CD players, laptops, coffee-makers, etc.
Should we reject the superior control and reliability that solid state electronics offers? Do we want to do without the capabilities that are now available?
There's something incongruent about the argument that electronically controlled features which were not available with mechanical controls should not be placed on the tractor. If you don't want or need, then don't buy. If your tractor has them, but they break down, then you don't have available what you didn't have before.
Our mercantile society is based on consumers buying what they want, and rejecting what is undesirable. John Deere (and other OEM's) isn't going to install features that aren't acceptable to their customer base.

I routinely buy a spare set of 3 blades for my mowers (595/54", JD272, LPFDR25-84"), because I sharpen at least 2-3 times each season, and I like to pull off the dull set and replace with a sharp set. Then I can take my time resharpening the dull set.
That doesn't give JD a rationale for a policy of not selling singles. Manufacturing blades to the proper tolerance to match up with older ones isn't rocket science (maybe bad reference in light of the Columbia). If I wreck one blade, I'd want to buy a single, not another trio.

"Toyota will introduce the Tundra Double Cab at the Chicago Auto Show in Feb, a version of its full-size pickup with four conventional doors. The Tundra lineup consists of regular cab and Access Cab models, the latter an extended cab with rear-opening back doors.
"Though the Tundra competes with full-size pickups, it lacks the size and brawn of big trucks from F, GM, and D, as well as the 2004 Nissan Titan. When the Titan was unveiled in Detroit, Nissan referred to Tundra as "seven-eighths of a full-sized p/u", but Toyota says size doesn't matter that much.
"In that market of about 2 million [full size] trucks, there are a lot of different buyer motivations," said Jim Press, chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales. "Tundra is a good personal-size truck. We're not necessarily going after the segment that wants to pull tractors."

Just mounted chains on the rears of X595. Two link ladder type, 26x12x12. They were $81 at the JD dealer. Also went to the Tirechains for Tractors website referenced above -- theirs was $90.36. Didn't check shipping but i'm guessing it would be 2x sales tax. So I was pretty happy; and there was no worrying whether the chains would fit.
I'm surprised that JD came in lower, but you just never know.
